The most important figure for an auto-darkening helmet is the shade range. DIN 9–13 covers ordinary welding, and a wider range such as DIN 5–13 also suits plasma cutting and angle grinding. The light state, i.e. DIN 3 or 4, tells you how well you can see the weld before the arc strikes.

The optical class is given as four numbers, for example 1/1/1/2. The closer to 1, the less distortion and the less eye strain during long working sessions.

A fresh-air helmet is worth considering if you weld stainless steel or galvanised surfaces or work in confined spaces. Welding fumes are a health risk that a filter mask does not eliminate.

Spare lenses are a consumable part – always keep some in stock.
